The Government of Assam, Department of School Education, has officially released the notification for the Special Assam Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)–2026 for Lower Primary (Classes I–V) and Upper Primary (Classes VI–VIII) levels. This special TET is being conducted for candidates intending to teach in Bodo, Garo, Manipuri, and Hmar medium elementary schools across the state of Assam.
The notification has been issued under the provisions of Section 23 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, following the guidelines laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Online applications are invited from eligible candidates who are permanent residents of Assam.
Purpose of Special Assam TET 2026:
This Special TET is being conducted to address the shortage of Language-I teachers in Bodo, Garo, Manipuri, and Hmar medium elementary schools. Candidates who qualify in this examination will be eligible to participate in future teacher recruitment processes, subject to fulfillment of other academic and professional qualifications as per NCTE norms.Eligibility Criteria:
To appear in the Special Assam TET-2026, a candidate must be a permanent resident of Assam and must fulfill the minimum academic and professional qualifications prescribed by NCTE.1. For Lower Primary Level (Classes I to V):
Candidates must have any one of the following qualifications:(i) Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education
(ii) Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.)
(iii) Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education)
(iv) Graduation along with a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education
2. For Upper Primary Level (Classes VI to VIII):
Candidates must possess any one of the following qualifications:(i) Graduation and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education
(ii) Graduation with at least 50% marks and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)
(iii) Post-Graduation with at least 55% marks and a 3-year integrated B.Ed.–M.Ed.
(iv) Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education
(v) Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and a 4-year B.A./B.Sc. Ed.
(vi) Graduation with at least 50% marks and 1-year B.Ed. (Special Education)
Candidates who were admitted to B.Ed. or B.El.Ed. courses before 29 July 2011 are exempted from the minimum percentage requirement in graduation.
Relaxation in Marks:
A relaxation of 5% in academic marks is applicable for candidates belonging to SC, ST (Plain/Hills), OBC, MOBC, and Persons with Disabilities (minimum 40% disability). This relaxation applies to both Paper-I and Paper-II.Examination Structure:
The Special Assam TET-2026 will consist of two papers.Paper-I is meant for candidates intending to teach Lower Primary (Classes I–V). It includes Child Development & Pedagogy, Language-I (Bodo/Garo/Manipuri/Hmar), Language-II (English), Mathematics, and Environmental Studies. The paper will have 150 multiple-choice questions carrying 150 marks.
Paper-II is for candidates intending to teach Upper Primary (Classes VI–VIII). It includes Child Development & Pedagogy, Language-I, Language-II (English), and either Mathematics & Science or Social Science, depending on the teaching preference. This paper also consists of 150 MCQs for 150 marks.
Each question carries one mark, and there will be no negative marking.
Duration of Examination:
The duration of both Paper-I and Paper-II will be 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes). Visually impaired candidates will be provided additional 20 minutes per hour.Qualifying Marks:
To qualify, a candidate must secure 60% marks (90 out of 150) in total and at least 60% marks in Language-I. For SC, ST, OBC, MOBC, and PWD candidates, there is a relaxation of 5% in total marks and 10% in Language-I, making the qualifying marks 55% overall and 50% in Language-I.Medium of Question Paper:
The question papers will be available in Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, and English.Examination Centres:
Candidates can choose one examination district while applying online. The examination will be conducted in Cachar, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Hojai, and Sonitpur districts.Validity of TET Certificate:
The Special Assam TET-2026 certificate will remain valid for a lifetime, unless notified otherwise by the Government of Assam.Application Process and Important Dates:
The online application portal will be opened from 07 January 2026. Detailed notifications regarding the last date of application, admit card release, and examination date will be published separately. Candidates are advised to regularly visit sebaonline.org, ssa.assam.gov.in, and scert.assam.gov.in for updates.Examination Fee:
For both Paper-I and Paper-II, the examination fee is ₹550 for General candidates, ₹450 for SC/ST/OBC/MOBC candidates, and ₹300 for PWD candidates. Candidates appearing for both papers must pay the fee separately for each paper. The fee is non-refundable.Important Instructions:
The application process is completely online, and candidates must carefully read the instructions before submission. Incomplete applications will be rejected. Qualifying in TET does not guarantee appointment, as teacher recruitment will be conducted separately when vacancies arise. 2. Carefully read the complete instructions for submitting the online application.
3. Fill in the online application form with correct personal, academic, and professional details.
4. Upload the required documents in the prescribed format and size, including:
• Recent passport-size colour photograph
• Signature
• Pass certificate of professional qualification
5. Pay the examination fee through online mode only using net banking, credit card, or debit card.
6. After successful submission and payment, take a printout of the online application form for future reference.
Important Points Related to Application:
(i) Candidates applying for both Paper I and Paper II must submit separate applications and pay the examination fee separately for each paper.(ii) The examination fee once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances.
(iii) Incomplete or incorrectly filled application forms will be summarily rejected, and no correction request will be entertained.
(iv) There will be no document verification at the time of the TET examination. Verification will be done only during the teacher recruitment process.
(v) Candidates must select only one examination district while filling out the application form.
