The Selection Process:
The SSB implements a rigorous, four-stage selection process heavily focused on physical fitness, anatomical standards, and trade proficiency. Biometric attendance (Left and Right thumb impressions), digital photographs, and signatures are taken and verified at all stages. Non-matching biometrics may lead to a "suspected category" marking.Stage I: Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST)
PET: Designed to test cardiovascular endurance. Male candidates must complete a 4.8 km race in 24 minutes, while female candidates must run 2.4 km in 18 minutes. Ex-servicemen are exempt from the PET but must complete all other stages.PST: Candidates qualifying the PET undergo strict anatomical measurements. Height and chest are measured accurately to one decimal place (e.g., 170.2 cm). Failing the minimum standards results in immediate rejection. Weight must be proportionate to height and age, assessed via BMI during the medical exam. Appeals against PST judgements can be made on the same day to the appellate authority.
PST Anatomical Requirements (General UR/EWS/OBC Candidates):
Constable (Veterinary): Males require 170 cm height, 80 cm chest with a minimum 5 cm expansion. Females require 157 cm height (chest not applicable).
Constable (Driver - Male only): Requires 170 cm height, 80 cm chest with a 5 cm expansion.
Trades (Gardener, Water Carrier, Cobbler, Tailor, Washerman, Barber, Waiter, Carpenter): Males require 167.5 cm height, 78 cm chest with 5 cm expansion. Females require 157 cm height.
Nursing Orderly: Males require 165 cm height, 75-80 cm chest. Females require 155 cm height.
(Note: Substantial relaxations in height and chest measurements apply to Scheduled Tribes and candidates from specific hilly or North-Eastern regions such as Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Gorkhas, Dogras, and Marathas, subject to certificate production.
Weight Proportionality Standards (Annexure-VI):
Body weight must correspond to height and age. The principle of 'Average' applies to intermediate heights, and BMI is used for doubtful overweight cases or older age relaxations. Examples from the charts include:
Male (170 cm): 52-64 kg (Age 18-22), 54-66 kg (Age 23-27), 56-68 kg (Age 28-32), 57.5-70.5 kg (Age 33-37).
Male (180 cm): 59-72 kg (Age 18-22), 61-75 kg (Age 23-27), 63.5-77.5 kg (Age 28-32), 65.5-80 kg (Age 33-37).
Female (155 cm): 38.5-47.5 kg (Age 18-22), 40-49 kg (Age 23-27), 41.5-50.5 kg (Age 28-32), 43-52.5 kg (Age 33-37).
Female (165 cm): 44-54 kg (Age 18-22), 45.5-55.5 kg (Age 23-27), 47-58 kg (Age 28-32), 48.5-59.5 kg (Age 33-37).
