Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Recruitment 2026: Apply Now for Head Constable Posts


The Government of India's Ministry of Home Affairs has released an official recruitment notification for the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Online applications are invited from eligible candidates to fill 233 Group-'C' Non-Gazetted (Combatised) & Non-Ministerial Head Constable posts.

These posts are temporary but likely to continue, and selected candidates are liable to serve anywhere within or outside the territory of India.

Post Details:

A total of 233 vacancies have been announced across four specialized Head Constable trades. Note that 10% of these vacancies are reserved for Ex-Servicemen; if eligible Ex-Servicemen are unavailable, non-Ex-Servicemen candidates will fill those spots.

Pay Scale and Benefits:

Pay Matrix: All four posts fall under Level-4, offering a Basic Pay of Rs. 25,500 to 81,100/-.

Allowances: The posts carry Dearness Allowance, Ration Money Allowance, House Rent Allowance, and other allowances as admissible in SSB per Government orders.

Pension Scheme: Selected candidates will be covered under the Defined Contributory Pension Scheme (New Pension Scheme) w.e.f. January 1, 2004, or the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) w.e.f. April 1, 2025, per prevailing rules.


Eligibility Conditions:

The crucial date for determining age and educational qualifications is the closing date of the application period, which is 30 days from the publication of the advertisement in the Employment News.

1. Head Constable (Steward):

Age: 18 to 27 years.

Qualifications: 12th class pass, a minimum two-year diploma in Catering and Kitchen management, and at least one year of experience as a Steward in a minimum 100-bedded government-recognized hospital/institution.


2. Head Constable (Communication):  

Age: 18 to 27 years.

Qualifications: 12th class in Science with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics; OR a three-year diploma in Electronics, Communications, Computer Science, or Information Technology from a recognized Institute.

 

3. Head Constable (Electrician): 

Age: 18 to 25 years.

Qualifications: Matriculation/10th pass. Must also possess either two years of work experience in the trade, a one-year ITI/Vocational certificate with one year of experience, or a two-year ITI Diploma in the trade. Candidates must qualify the trade test.


4. Head Constable (Veterinary):

Age: 18 to 27 years.

Qualifications: 12th class pass with Science and Biology as main subjects, and a two-year Diploma Course in Veterinary and Livestock Development, Veterinary Stock Assistant, or Animal Husbandry.


Age Relaxations:

Standard government age relaxations apply beyond the upper limit:

SC/ST: 5 years.

OBC: 3 years.

Ex-Servicemen: 3 years after deduction of military service from actual age.

Other relaxations apply to Departmental candidates (Central Govt. employees), individuals domiciled in J&K and Ladakh (1980-1989), and dependents of 1984 riot victims.


Selection Process:

The SSB utilizes biometric verification (left and right thumb impressions, digital photo) across all stages of recruitment.

Stage I: Physical Efficiency Test (PET) & Physical Standard Test (PST)

PET: Male candidates must complete a 1.6 km race in 6 minutes and 30 seconds. Female candidates must run 800 meters in 4 minutes. Ex-servicemen are exempt from the PET.

PST (Height & Chest): Candidates must clear strict physical standards.

Steward (UR): Males 165 cm (Chest 75-80 cm), Females 155 cm.

Communication & Veterinary (UR): Males 170 cm (Chest 80-85 cm), Females 157 cm.

Electrician (UR): Males 167.5 cm (Chest 78-83 cm), Females 157 cm.

(Note: Substantial height and chest relaxations apply to Scheduled Tribes, Gorkhas, Garhwalis, Dogras, Marathas, and candidates from specific North-Eastern regions and Left-Wing Extremism affected districts). Weight must be proportionate to height and age (assessed via BMI).


Stage II: Written Examination (Computer Based Test)

Structure: A 3-hour Common Entrance Test totaling 150 marks (150 multiple-choice questions).

Part-I (50 Marks): General Knowledge, Mathematics, Reasoning, and General English/General Hindi.

Part-II (100 Marks): Technical Subject.

Qualifying Marks: 50% for Gen/EWS/OBC/Ex-SM, and 45% for SC/ST. Final merit is prepared solely on these written exam marks.


Stage III: Skill Test (Only for HC Electrician)

(i) Candidates applying for Head Constable (Electrician) must undergo a 50-mark skill test.

(ii) The minimum qualifying score is 60% for all categories. This test is qualifying in nature, and marks are not added to the final merit list.


Stage IV: Documentation & Medical Examination

(i) Candidates up to 3 times the vacancies will be shortlisted based on written exam merit for Document Verification (DV) and Detailed Medical Examination (DME) / Review Medical Examination (RME).

(ii) Failure to produce original documents leads to immediate cancellation of candidacy.

Examination Fee: Unreserved (UR), EWS, and OBC candidates must pay a non-refundable fee of Rs. 100/- via Net Banking, Credit Card, Debit Card, or UPI. SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, and Female candidates are completely exempt from fees.

 

Photo & Signature Guidelines:

Photo: JPG format, 4 KB to 12 KB, 100x120 pixels, with a white background showing 75% face. No hats, caps, or goggles. If photographed with a beard, the candidate must maintain it during the recruitment process.

Signature: Black or dark blue ink, JPG format, 140x60 pixels (the document lists both 4-12 KB and 3 KB-1 MB size limits in different sections). Signatures cannot be in initials, typed, or all capital letters.

There is no provision for a reserve/waiting merit list. Candidates must arrive at the exam venue at least 30 minutes early; mobile phones, calculators, and other digital devices are strictly prohibited.
